Construction Company: Building Skills and Futures

October 25, 2024 By PBC Ministries Team

Here are part of our amazing youth construction workers who are employed by Precious Beloved Children Ministries' Construction Company, creating opportunities for sustainable livelihoods while building up our community.

At Precious Beloved Children Ministries, we believe in empowering youth not just through education but also through practical skills training and employment opportunities. Our Construction Company initiative is one of our most successful programs, providing vocational training, employment, and a path to financial independence for young people in Kwio Akuru Village and surrounding areas.

Creating Opportunities Through Construction

The Construction Company was established in 2022 with a dual mission: to provide quality construction services to the community while training and employing local youth. What began as a small team of five apprentices has now grown into a thriving enterprise with over 20 young workers who are developing valuable skills in various aspects of construction.

Youth Workers Employed

Our youth workers receive comprehensive training in:

  • Masonry and Bricklaying: Learning the fundamentals of building solid structures
  • Carpentry: Creating furniture, doors, windows, and roof structures
  • Plumbing: Installing and maintaining water systems
  • Electrical Work: Basic electrical installation and safety
  • Painting and Finishing: Adding the final touches to construction projects
  • Project Management: Planning, budgeting, and overseeing construction work

"Before joining the Construction Company, I had no clear path for my future. Now I have skills that no one can take away from me, and I can provide for my family. I'm even teaching my younger brother what I've learned."

Construction Projects Completed

Our dedicated construction team has successfully completed a range of projects that benefit our school and community. Here's a summary of our achievements:

  1. Infrastructure Development:
    • Medical Clinic: We've built a medical clinic to provide essential healthcare services to our community.
    • Church Renovation: Our team renovated an old church building, serving as a nursery class.
    • Steel Buildings: We've erected a church steel building and two steel school buildings, providing safe and durable spaces for worship, learning, and community activities.
  2. Water Collection and Supply:
    • Rainwater Harvesting: We've installed 12 tanks measuring 10,000 Ltrs and three tanks measuring 5,000 ltrs for rainwater collection, helping to conserve this precious resource.
    • Solar-Powered Borehole: Our team drilled a solar-powered water pump borehole, providing a sustainable source of clean water.
  3. Furniture and Facilities:
    • Desks and Furniture: We've made 50 desks and various furniture pieces, including office tables, to support learning and administrative activities.
    • Staff Facilities: We've completed a three-room staff building to accommodate three teachers, providing them with a comfortable living space. Additionally, we've built one staff toilet, enhancing the overall amenities for our staff, and we also renovated one toilet for pupils.

These projects are key to building a stronger, more sustainable community. We're proud of our team's hard work and dedication to delivering high-quality results.

Impact on Youth Lives

"I used to spend my days idle, with no purpose. Now I wake up excited to work with my hands and see what we can create together. I'm saving money to start my own small construction business someday."

Jakisa Rogers
Program Participant for 18 months

"People were surprised to see a woman on the construction site at first. Now they come specifically asking for me because they know I'm meticulous with the finishing work. This job has given me confidence I never had before."

Sarah
Female Construction Worker

The impact of the Construction Company goes far beyond the physical structures being built. For many of our youth workers, this program represents their first opportunity for formal employment and skill development.

Sustainable Model

1
Income Generation

Income from projects pays youth workers fair wages

2
Reinvestment

A portion of profits is reinvested in training and equipment

3
Community Support

The ministry can offer subsidized services to the most vulnerable community members

4
Program Expansion

Excess revenue supports other ministry programs

This approach ensures that the program can continue to grow and serve more young people without relying solely on donations.

Future Plans

  • Expanding our training program to include 15 new apprentices in 2025
  • Developing specialized teams for different construction disciplines
  • Establishing a tool lending library for graduates who start independent work
  • Creating a certification program recognized by regional employers
  • Building partnerships with construction material suppliers for discounted materials

We believe that by investing in practical skills and creating employment opportunities, we are addressing the root causes of poverty and building a stronger, more self-sufficient community.
